The Difference Between Exfoliators and Tan Removers

When prepping for a spray tan, many clients assume exfoliators and tan removers are the same thing — but they serve very different purposes. Knowing when and how to use each is key to achieving a smooth, even, long-lasting glow.

An exfoliator is designed to slough away dead skin cells, helping keep the skin smooth and fresh. These products typically contain granular ingredients like sugar, salt, or finely ground nutshells that physically buff the skin. Exfoliating is ideal two days before your spray tan, giving your skin time to recover and rebalance before your appointment. This step helps prevent dry patches and ensures your tan applies evenly.

A tan remover, on the other hand, is specially formulated to break down and lift existing self-tan pigment from the skin. Rather than scrubbing, tan removers work on a chemical level to dissolve old DHA buildup. They’re perfect for correcting patchiness, lightening an overly dark tan, or completely resetting your skin before re-tanning.

The gold standard in tan removal is Rose & Caramel. Their tan-removing products use ingredients like urea and perlite, which gently loosen and lift old color without aggressive scrubbing or irritation. This makes a tan remover ideal for use the day before your spray tan, when you want a clean canvas without stressing the skin.

The cliff notes? You need both.

Exfoliators smooth the skin. Tan removers erase old color. Together, they create the flawless foundation every spray tan needs.
